‘The Bachelorette’: Why Was Rachel Lindsay’s Dad Absent (Again)?

Experiencing deja vu, Bachelorette Nation?

Monday’s episode of The Bachelorette marked the second time on the ABC reality franchise that Rachel Lindsay’s father was missing during a date with the Dallas family.

During the penultimate episode of the season, Lindsay took her three finalists — Eric Bigger, Bryan Abasolo and Peter Kraus — home to the Lonestar state to meet her mother, sister, brother-in-law, uncle, aunt and two friends — but not her father.

The patriarch of the Lindsay family has never appeared on the franchise and his title alone hints at why: Judge Sam A. Lindsay. His work has likely interfered with ABC’s tight production schedule (by Dallas week, Lindsay had been dating her suitors for nine weeks).

In the absence of her father, the Bachelorette’s final three men had the opportunity to ask Kathy Lindsay for her daughter’s hand in marriage. Speaking on behalf of her husband, she gave her blessing to Bigger and Abasolo to propose and Kraus to date (the latter wasn’t yet ready to ask for a proposal blessing).

Judge Lindsay was also missing in action when his daughter brought home Nick Viall during

his hometown week on the last season of The Bachelor. Typically, the family of the Bachelorette or Bachelor only meet the final two picks during the finale, but Lindsay’s sister, Constance, is eight months pregnant and would have been unable to travel to Spain to meet them for the final week. Once again, Lindsay changed up show rules.

In March, fresh off her announcement as the new Bachelorette, Rachel told Hollywood Insight  that she was not certain whether or not her father would make it on her turn as the leading lady, which began filming just a few months after her Bachelor exit. Though he has never stood before Bachelor Nation, Rachel’s dad has encouraged his daughter’s journey to find love.

“My dad is very supportive about me being the Bachelorette. He realizes what an amazing experience it is. And seeing how I was portrayed in Nick’s season, I think it took away the skepticism that they had about you know like the unknown,” Lindsay explained to Hollywood Insight during the taping of Viall’s Women Tell All earlier this year. “Will he be on my season? I don’t know. I just don’t know yet because my sister’s pregnant. She’s having a baby and so I just don’t know how the timing is going to work.”

It is possible Judge Lindsay has already met the final three men off camera, as he did with Viall during Bachelor season 21. Rachel, who finished third on Viall’s season, did not want to be present during their chat. “I just wanted them to have their moment. It was a real-life experience without the cameras. He got to talk to my dad and talk about me, the possibilities of what we could have and I love that! No cameras involved.”
