The list of possible next projects for director Steven Spielberg is only getting longer.

Just days after it was revealed that DreamWorks has partnered with The Weinstein Co. on a religious period drama that Spielberg is considering, Tom Hanks has become attached to another of Spielberg’s next-directorial-effort contenders.

The Oscar winner is attached to star in an untitled Cold War project written by Matt Charman and produced by Marc PlattHollywoodinsight.com  has confirmed.

It tells the true story of James Donovan, an attorney who was thrust into the center of the Cold War when he negotiated the release of downed U-2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers. Hanks’ attachment gives momentum to the project, which was set up last year.

If Spielberg does indeed make this movie, it would mark the fourth feature film partnership between the director and the actor. The two previously collaborated on Saving Private Ryan, The Terminal and Catch Me If You Can. They also acted as producers on such projects as the acclaimed HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.

The project joins a list of Spielberg contenders that also includes Robopocalypse, a sci-fi tentpole set up at Fox, and Montezuma, which tackles the drama between Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes and the famous Aztec ruler.

Spielberg has not committed to any new projects since dropping out of American Sniper last year.
